The SkyHawks' success was spearheaded by junior Leila Stevenson, whose dedicated practice against riseballs paid off with a home run, a double, and four RBIs. This strategic preparation against Box Elder's ace pitcher, Kennadie Blackmer, combined with Salem Hills' formidable defense, proved to be the winning formula.
Leila Stevenson's outstanding offensive display was a direct result of her diligent preparation. Anticipating Blackmer's signature riseball, Stevenson spent an hour before the game honing her batting skills with her father. This foresight proved invaluable, as Blackmer, known for leading 5A with 203 strikeouts, typically relies on her riseball to challenge batters. Stevenson's ability to counter this potent pitch set the tone for Salem Hills' offense.
Beyond Stevenson's individual brilliance, Salem Hills showcased a cohesive team effort. Coach Kalab Stokes highlighted pitcher Jo Norman's pivotal role, noting her consistent ability to keep Box Elder batters off balance, despite recording only one strikeout. Stevenson credited this collective effort, stating, "As soon as Emmery hit that triple, that's when I was like, 'OK, I can get on base too.' I feel like we just all worked together to get that one." While Blackmer managed seven strikeouts, Salem Hills' patience at the plate and their disciplined approach against her riseball were key. They waited for their pitches, resulting in 10 hits and five players contributing at least one RBI. Adalun Mattinson also added two RBIs, complementing Stevenson's stellar performance.
