British-Indian financier Amit Bhatia is currently engaged in preliminary discussions regarding a potential minority investment in the esteemed Premier League football club, Liverpool. Bhatia, who is the son-in-law of prominent Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, is at the helm of a consortium keen on acquiring a share in the club, which boasts an impressive 20 English championship titles.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the American owners of Liverpool, has acknowledged the approach made by Bhatia's group. A representative for FSG confirmed that a consortium led by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic, non-controlling investment in Liverpool Football Club. Reports from the Financial Times indicate that Bhatia has enlisted advisors to facilitate this potential transaction, which could appraise Liverpool's value at more than $6 billion.
In a related development, just hours after news of his interest in Liverpool surfaced, Bhatia resigned from his position as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers (QPR), an English Championship side. Having spent 18 seasons with the West London club, Bhatia will transfer his ownership stake to the majority owner, Ruben Gnanalingam. He expressed his pride and gratitude upon stepping down, thanking players, staff, and fans for making him and his family feel like part of the QPR community for many years. These discussions with FSG, who initially acquired Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million (approximately $400 million), are understood to be in their nascent stages, with no formal agreement yet in place. Any forthcoming investment from Bhatia would aim to bolster Liverpool's continued success, following FSG's previous move in 2023 to sell a minority stake to the global sports investment firm Dynasty, a deal then valued between $100 million and $200 million.
This potential investment signifies a growing global interest in top-tier sports franchises, demonstrating the attractive value proposition these clubs offer. It underscores the trend of strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing competitive edge and long-term sustainability in the dynamic world of professional football.
