Google Meet is implementing a substantial enhancement to its file management capabilities, offering users a more streamlined and intuitive experience. This update focuses on automatically categorizing meeting-related documents—such as notes, transcripts, and recordings—within Google Drive. The new system is designed to alleviate the common challenge of locating post-meeting resources, thereby boosting overall productivity and collaboration.
Previously, meeting files generated by Google Meet were often dispersed within the host's Google Drive, lacking a centralized and organized structure. This made it difficult for hosts and attendees alike to quickly access necessary documents after a conference. Recognising this inefficiency, Google has rolled out a new feature that will automatically create a dedicated 'Google Meet' folder within the host's My Drive. Within this primary folder, individual subfolders will be generated for each meeting, ensuring that all associated materials are kept together.
A particularly useful aspect of this update is its handling of recurring meetings. Instead of scattering files from multiple instances of the same meeting across various locations, the system will group all related documents within a single, designated subfolder. This consolidation is expected to significantly improve continuity and referencing for ongoing projects and teams. Furthermore, attendees who have been granted access to meeting files will also benefit from this organization, as shortcuts to these neatly arranged documents will appear in their own Google Meet folders.
The transition to this improved folder structure also includes a clean-up of older file arrangements. Existing 'Meet Recordings' folders will be relocated into the new 'Google Meet' directory and subsequently renamed 'Legacy Meet Recordings.' Users might observe both old and new folder structures concurrently for a brief period during this migration phase. The phased rollout commenced with Rapid Release domains on July 22, 2026, with Scheduled Release domains slated to receive the update on July 30. This functionality will be available to all Google Workspace customers, though administrators may need to verify any automated scripts or workflows that depend on specific folder names or identification numbers.
