Instructions

The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair has released an impressive roster of over 20 galleries for its highly anticipated New York showing, set to open from May 13–17 at the Starrett-Lehigh Building in Chelsea. This marks the fair's return to the prominent location, having previously hosted its 2024 event there. The upcoming edition promises a dynamic blend of established participants like 193 Gallery, Galerie Myrtis, and Kates-Ferri Projects, alongside fresh faces such as Adegbola Gallery from Lagos, Aura from São Paulo, The Current: Baha Mar Gallery & Art Center from Nassau, and Picture Theory Projects from New York.

A significant highlight of this year's fair is the debut of a specially curated section titled "1-54 Presents: Brazil Beyond Brazil." This innovative segment, organized by independent curator Igor Simões, is dedicated to showcasing the vibrant artistic expressions of Afro-Brazilian creators. It acknowledges Brazil's unique position as the largest African-descendant nation outside of Africa. According to a press release, "Brazil Beyond Brazil" aims to feature artworks that delve into archival research, re-examine modernist legacies, and challenge conventional understandings of national and art historical narratives.

Touria El Glaoui, the founding director of 1-54, emphasized the fair's dedication to broadening global perspectives. She stated that this year's exhibitors underscore the fair's international reach, embracing new participants from Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Americas. El Glaoui also noted that the "Brazil Beyond Brazil" initiative, guided by Igor Simões, is crucial for fostering dialogue and cultural exchange across different geographies, presenting a nuanced view of Brazilian art that celebrates the profound and intricate contributions of artists who are redefining African identity and its diaspora on a global stage.

The art world is a vibrant tapestry of cultures and expressions, constantly evolving and inviting us to explore new perspectives. Events like the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair not only provide platforms for artists but also foster understanding and appreciation for diverse narratives, enriching our collective human experience and inspiring us to see the world through a broader, more inclusive lens.
